Since childhood I have enjoyed making things so it was only natural to be making well in to adulthood. I studied 3 Dimensional Design at college and later decided to learn the craft of upholstery. I created many of my own bespoke furniture pieces manipulating fabrics to create texture and light relief. Many of these pieces were featured in magazines and sold all over the UK and abroad. I tried some of these techniques out with leather and found a material I wanted to explore. I went on a weekend study course to learn about surface leather decoration and became hooked with the potential of the material.
My first series of works ‘Flora and Fauna’ showed at Collect, the leading International Art Fair for Contemporary Craft and Design. The series composed of 5 interior pieces adorned hand carved leather designs inspired by nature. The pieces featured in The Style Pages of The Sunday Times with a feature by Vinny Lee. https://vinnyleeatwork.wordpress.com/times-magazine-features/
I applied for the Cockpit Arts / Leathersellers’ Award which I received for 2 years running. This enabled me to have the time and space to be more experimental with my ideas. I applied many more techniques to my leather work, molding, gilding, braiding and stitching creating a series of life-size leather bird sculptures. ‘Self Reliance’ a heron with outstretched wings showed and sold at The Royal Academy Summer Show 2019 https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/article/inside-the-2019-summer-exhibition
My studio practice continues working primarily in leather exploring texture and form through hand crafted sculptural and interior pieces combining traditional leather working techniques with contemporary artistic expression. Each piece is individually developed through an intensive making process, creating artworks that sit between sculpture, craftsmanship and fine art. Works have been created for exhibitions, private collectors, commissioned projects and films.
